Create your own ray of sunshine

Very often you have to create your own ray of sunshine to bring back a bit of sparkle in to your life. We’ve had some dark, rainy days but are now seeing the sun shine through and what a difference it makes in lifting your spirits.

The last time I wrote an emotional post similar to this was about six months ago which, I believe, is a positive sign. The boys are much better and I am thrilled to say we have found ourselves in a much happier, healthier and brighter place!

So how did it all start?

Since Big J was 5 years old, we have been through turmoil trying to understand what was causing his constant tummy ache, lethargy and sickness. It took us almost two years to start to understand what could be causing these issues and, only when we started cutting out dairy, did things start to improve – not overnight – but slowly and surely.

Months later, even though the situation had bettered, things still weren’t right. So we took the next step and cut out soya and then gluten quickly followed.

This was a drastic step but, over the coming weeks, we started to see a change for the better, eventually leading to months of better health. Removing gluten, dairy and soya from his diet lead to the most significant improvement – more so than any medication would have done. I admit that he still has to take some medicine but it is a fraction of what it used to be. Now, he thrives, exuding energy like any normal eight year old!

Help is at hand

We have been very lucky as we have had the advice of a trained dietician and paediatric doctors, but if these symptoms ring a bell with you, why don’t you consult your doctor and suggest a food intolerance test? Maybe experiment with a few things first, like cutting out dairy, and just see how you get on. Leave it for a while and then start withdrawing gluten and see if it makes a difference.

When doing this, write a diary and make a note of  how you feel and anything out of the ordinary. Start shopping in the free from aisles at your local supermarket, implement a ‘reward sticker chart’ and sprinkle all of this with a lots and lots of patience and perseverance.

You are not alone

Nobody can truly understand the stress and anxiety a parent faces when their child suffers from ill health. But you know you are not alone and , hopefully, I have given some ideas about what to do next.

And remember, take small steps and you will eventually create your own ray of sunshine and be happy and healthy once more.
